USB Stuck In Port? Don’t Panic! Here’s How To Remove It Safely

Uh oh! Did the metal casing of your USB drive break off and get stuck in your computer’s port?

Don’t worry. This happens more often than you think. There are a few easy ways to get the metal part out without damaging the port or your computer.

In this post, I’ll show you how to safely remove a USB stuck in a port.

How To Remove USB Stuck In Port

A man showing how to remove a USB from a port.

1. Turn Off Your Device

Shut down your computer, laptop, tablet, or whatever device you’re using before you try to remove the stuck USB.

If it’s still on, you could mess up your files or even damage the hardware if you accidentally touch something you shouldn’t inside while fiddling with the USB port.

So, make sure it’s completely turned off and if you can, unplug it too.

2. Check The Port

Grab a flashlight and take a good, close look at the stuck USB from different angles.

See how stuck it is, which way it’s facing, and if there’s any part you might be able to grab with something like tweezers or pliers.

Also, check if there’s any gunk or stuff around it that might be causing it to be stuck.

3. Use A Tweezer Or Plier

If you can get a good grip on any exposed part of the metal USB end, try using a pair of tweezers, and needle nose pliers to slowly work it back and forth and pull it out gradually.

Go slowly and don’t yank, as you don’t want to risk snapping it or scratching the port’s interior.

If it won’t budge, stop and try the next method.

4. Use A Nail Cutter

If you don’t have any tweezers or pliers, or if they won’t get a good grip on the stuck USB end, you can use a nail cutter instead.

Grab a metal part of the USB with the nail cutter.

Then apply a bit of pressure, and rock the cutter back and forth to work the stuck USB free.

But do this very slowly and use delicate movements to avoid any sudden slips that could scratch the inner port surfaces.

5. Use A Paperclip

If the stuck USB is difficult to grab using the tools, you can use a paper clip.

Get a strong paper clip straighten it out, and use pliers if needed to create a small hook shape at one end. The hook should open towards the inside of the USB port.

Now, carefully insert the straightened paper clip, hook-end first, into the USB port.

Move it around slowly, and try to feel where the stuck USB connector is. You might have to adjust its position a few times.

Once you’ve hooked onto the USB end, try to keep the angle straight and gently pull it.

Take your time and if it gets stuck, don’t push too hard.

6. Other Methods

You can also use something super thin (thinner than a credit card), and gently slide it into the gap between the USB connector and the port to help loosen it from the chassis.

This worked for me once, and it has worked for others too.

I’ve also read about people using dental floss, and even super glue – but I’m not sure if it’ll work.

Preventative Measures: Stop USB Woes Before They Start!

Taking a few simple precautions can significantly reduce the chances of your USB drive getting stuck in the port. Here’s how to be a USB ninja and avoid future frustration:

Handle with Care: Treat your USB drives with respect. Avoid rough handling, bending, or dropping them.

The Right Grip: Always grasp the USB drive by the plastic body, not the metal connector.

Cleanliness is Key: Dust and debris can build up inside the port, causing jams. Occasionally use compressed air (canned air) to gently blow out any dust from the port (with the device turned off and unplugged).

One at a Time: Focus on using one USB drive at a time in a particular port. Avoid plugging in multiple devices simultaneously, as it can put stress on the ports.

The Safe Eject: Never yank a USB drive out of the port! Always follow the proper ejection procedure for your operating system (Windows, Mac, etc.). This ensures all data transfer is complete before disconnecting the drive.

On Windows: Right-click the USB drive icon in the taskbar and select “Eject” before removing it.
On Mac: Drag the USB drive icon to the Trash and wait for it to disappear before physically removing it.

A Wiggle Before You Giggle: When inserting the USB drive, hold it straight and gently push it in until it stops. Don’t force it! If it doesn’t slide in easily, check for any obstructions and try again. A slight wiggle can sometimes help it seat properly.

The Jiggle Test: Before removing the USB drive, gently wiggle it back and forth slightly. This can help loosen any dust or debris that might be holding it in place.

Upgrade Time? If you’re using an older USB drive, consider upgrading to a newer model. Technology advances, and newer drives may have more robust designs that are less prone to sticking.

By following these simple tips, you can keep your USB drives happy and healthy, and avoid the headaches of a stuck drive in the future.

Wrapping Up

If you’ve tried everything and still can’t get the stuck USB out, it’s a good idea to get help from a computer technician or contact the device’s manufacturer.

FAQs

Mouse USB Stuck In Port

If your mouse USB is stuck in the port, you can try the same techniques I showed earlier. Take your time and use tools like pliers, paper clips, or a nail cutter to carefully remove it.

Something Stuck In The USB Port

If there’s something else stuck in the USB port, you can still use all the things I talked about earlier to get it out. I recommend trying a tweezer or a plier first.
