The Christmas shopping season quickly approaches. A record amount of time and money will be spent online this year. Are your Ocean Cloud websites and web apps ready for the traffic increases you expect? Now is the time to prepare and we’re here to help you batten down the hatches! Here are some great optimization tips from our resident cloud experts to make this holiday season merry and successful!

Static Content- For the best performance we recommend migrating all static media files (images, video, audio, flash, etc.) to the CDN (Content Delivery Network) of your choice. We offer CDN integration with Limelight via our Cloud Files offering, but any CDN will work. This gives you decreased latency when accessing media as the content is cached and served by servers closest to their physical location.

Database Optimization – Many sites leverage the use of databases. For busy websites, databases can become a choke point if not properly optimized. Fine tuning all queries, creating indexes, (and engine type if MySQL) are all good ways of optimizing your database. If you are unfamiliar with database optimization it may be best to consult with a professional DBA (Database Administrator).

SSL – SSL may be right for you but should be used only when necessary. SSL traffic is encrypted and causes additional server processing time. We encourage you to pass only the traffic that needs to be secure to the SSL servers as the non-SSL clusters are more robust and are better equipped to handle traffic spikes. To accomplish this, create a sub-domain (e.g. secure.example.com) through which secure transactions are processed. This allows SSL traffic to pass through a separate location and provides customers with a visual cue that they are on a secure site.

Coding - The final piece of the puzzle is the code itself. Efficient code will always yield a better performing site. This is especially true when the site is very busy. Issues that aren’t evident during normal usage come to light when the site is busy. Reducing the number of external calls your code makes, reducing includes, reducing database queries, and making sure to verify any errors greatly helps.

UPLOAD YOUR SITE TO THE CLOUD

You can create a new Ocean Cloud powered site in less than five minutes. Load balancing, clustering, and redundant storage are all inherited by your application automatically, without any effort.

SCALING HAPPENS AUTOMATICALLY
Right from the second you upload your websites to Ocean Cloud Sites, your sites are hosted on advanced clustered cloud computing technology designed for high-performance. When your site outgrows what’s included, you pay inexpensive scale pricing for exactly what you use on the cloud and nothing more.

Many of the new cloud hosting platforms require that you use custom code and architecture. Cloud Sites is designed to run your applications with very little (if any) modification. Cloud Sites is a powerful hosting platform built on existing web standards and powered by proven technology that you know, trust, and use regularly. You get the benefits of a scalable cloud platform without spending time coding custom APIs or data schemas. Whether you’re looking to resell web hosting services, or manage dozens of your own websites, Cloud Sites gets you on the Cloud quickly, easily, and with lots of room to grow.

Are you interested in lengthening your manhood? Finding cheap prescription drugs? How about helping a Nigerian diplomat transfer a large amount of money into an off-shore account? If you have an email account, chances are that you’ve been asked these questions, and various others, before in email messages known as spam. Whether you get 3 to 4 a day or 30 to 40, sorting through and deleting these unsolicited commercial emails can take up time and energy. With a little bit of information, you can help slow the spam down without the need to open new email accounts or change aliases.

Choosing a domain name is a big decision. When I originally started trading under Taming the Beast years ago, a search on that phrase didn’t bring back too many results. A search on Google recently brought back 697,000 results…..how times change…..

Think up a number of possible domain names

Finding a good domain name that isn’t taken these days is pretty hard to do. If you have ever tried to get a user ID with a service such as Yahoo, you will understand how frustrating it can be when you think up the perfect name that nobody else could have possibly thought of, only to find that yes, you can have that name if you are happy to have 7865 tacked on to the end of it. King Solomon is reported to have said “There is nothing new under the sun”…..or the Internet it would seem.

Don’t set your heart on any one name, but make a list of possibilities. It’s a good idea to be online at the time and to access a WHOIS application to determine whether a name has been taken.

Typing an address into your browser will not be an accurate way of ascertaining ownership as approximately 86% of all domain names currently registered are not in use. A WHOIS query is the most accurate way to tell. To access a WHOIS application and check on the availability, try this Internet domain name search tool.

Generic, Business names and Trademarks

Most people choose to register their business name as a domain name, but it’s well worthwhile considering selecting a generic name, something that is related to your subject area or industry. Not only will it be easier for people to remember, but it will also have greater resale value if you should choose to sell your site in the future.

It is also wise to check whether the name you are registering encroaches on any other trademark. Many people have registered celebrity or company names hoping to make a quick buck by selling them back to their “owners”. This usually backfires as it is an illegal practice called “cybersquatting”. It’s definitely not worth the court case, even registering a misspelling of a popular brand name can land you in hot water.

Generic terms cannot be trademarked to the point of the exclusion of others using the word combinations. Since generic one word domain names are virtually impossible to locate now, try two word combinations that inspire and promote your products or services; e.g. solidbargain.com.

A domain name should be short and simple

Ok, so you have found your name and decided that you wish to build a world wide empire. You have chosen www.evry1-has2visitmywonderfulsite.com ….what’s wrong with this? Sure, it’s descriptive, it challenges and it’s generic. But it’s also a mixture of numbers, letters, abbreviations, hyphens and horribly long.

A domain name should be easy to remember, easy to relay to someone over the telephone and where possible, the first letter should be as close to the letter “a” as possible. A number of indices categorize alphabetically. Domain names should also be as brief as possible. Unfortunately, when I began “Taming the Beast” in the mid-90′s I didn’t consider some of these issues.

Spammers mine this for email addresses. It can even be used by scammers looking to steal or transfer your domain name.

Protect your details

WHOIS privacy stops your personal or business details being found. It replaces your details with generic information from our privacy service and is absolutely free.

As part of our efforts to continually improve our Ocean Cloud offerings, we will be performing maintenance on our Cloud Sites environment. The maintenance window has been rescheduled and will now occur on Friday November 12th, 2010 from 10:00 pm US-CDT (3:00 am GMT) and end Saturday November 12th, 2010 at 10:00am US-CDT (3:00 pm GMT).

During the maintenance window, we will be updating our Billing systems in order to align all billing for hosting fees, overages, and add-ons to the same billing period and date. These changes will not affect nor change any of your current billing fees.

For further details, below we have provided a breakdown of some new features that will help to improve your Billing experience!

The major change is related to the timeframe in which fees are billed. Here is the scenario.

Currently:

. Hosting fees are billed in advance (before the month of service)

. Fees for overages in bandwidth, disk, and compute cycles usage are billed in arrears (after the month end)

. Fees for add-on products and services, such as MSSQL and SSL subscribed to during the month, are billed a prorated amount separately at the time of subscription. In the months following the fee for the add-ons is billed in advance

After:

. All fees will be billed in arrears at the end of the month (including prorated fees for add-ons subscribed to during the month). A final bill will be issued at the time of account closure.

This change will align all billing for hosting fees, overages, and add-ons to the same billing period and date. Your billing date will remain the same. Secondly, if you subscribe to Ocean Cloud’s client billing services, we will align your entire client billing dates with your billing date. Your client usage reset dates will match your account anniversary date. This will make it easier for you to know when your clients will be billed and when you will receive the funds collected on your behalf. This gives you a single date to remember and discuss with your clients. Your clients will continue to be billed in advance for the billing period selected.

On 1 December 2010 we will begin a Sunrise phase for the release of reserved short domain names.

During the Registered Rights Sunrise phase – starting at midday (GMT) on December 1st and closing at midday (GMT) January 17th – trade mark rights holders can apply for a domain that matches their trade mark. They will need evidence of using the trade mark in the UK prior to 1 January 2008, as each application will be independently verified.

If there is more than one verified application, domains will be auctioned off to the highest bidder, with proceeds going to the Nominet Trust. Domains not allocated will then go forward to a second sunrise phase, when the rights qualification will be extended to unregistered rights holders. Any remaining domains will proceed to a “landrush” period in which anyone can participate. Ocean Telecom will make further announcements regarding these stages in due course.
